Behaviour change and staff engagement
A fundamental part of implementing a sustainability strategy is to engage staff from right across the institution. You cannot implement without that engagement.
We build confidence and competence on the sustainability agenda so your people can become champions for sustainability.
Part of the work we do is to find ways to help the sustainability agenda complement what they’re already doing.
We will develop the engagement plan in such a way that it supports staff in delivering their existing priorities, not creates new work for them.
We can:
- Work with your sustainability lead to support them to take forward your engagement plan - through a mixture of advice, training and coaching
- Work with leadership teams to build their understanding of sustainability, how it fits into the institutional journey and how it’s relevant to different parts of the business. AIf relevant we’ll also help them understand their NetPositive role
- Build staff capacity through training and behaviour change programmes, and champion development. We can produce sustainability training for different groups - large or small, specialists or cross-departmental – with a focus on how they take it forward in their part of the business
Examples of our work on engagement with universities include:
- Working with the sustainability manager at Oxford Brookes University, helping her build staff capacity and promote Oxford Brokers’ NetPositive approach to other universities.
- At Queen Margaret University we worked with a member of the team leading on sustainability, Lorna Prince. We supported Lorna in the development and implementation of their sustainability strategy. We also built staff capacity through one-on-one sessions and group training.
- Through the EAUC pilot project on behaviour change management we worked with the University of the West of Scotland’s leadership team. The team is large – 30 people – and we built their understanding of sustainability and how it fits into their strategy through a interactive workshops, exercises and discussion. In these types of sessions we explore your issues and challenge you to think more deeply, then look for opportunities to take your strategy forward.
- Developing champions networks. We have created a training programme that all staff can take part in. It will be tailored to your institution and will build staff’s understanding of sustainability and put them together in networks to help them to take collective ownership of the agenda. We deliver a series of interventions that allow them to share ideas. This activity ranges from large staff events to doing tailored department by department training.
